More than anything, Chaske Spencer just wants to keep it real.

This may seem strange coming from the man who just wrapped up a multi-film stint in the massively successful fantasy-laden Twilight series, but a brief conversation with him makes this all too clear.

Take, for example, his perspective on his Twilight character, werewolf pack leader Sam Uley. While he appreciates many things about his animalistic alter-ego, not the least of which are his CGI antics played out on the big screen – “I never thought I would see myself jump off a cliff. I mean it was amazing!” he says – what he most hopes fans will take away from the most recent installments is that which makes the character most relatable – most human.

“What I got from talking to the kids, the fans of Twilight, is that a lot of them just hated Sam. A lot of them did not like Sam,” he recalls with a laugh. “So what I want to do is make him more human, more a character that you can relate to. In the Breaking Dawn film you get this sense that, in the script, he’s out to just kill Renesmee and he hates Bella, but that’s not the case. It’s just that it’s a job that he has to do.”

Similarly, Spencer notes, it’s the human element of filmmaking that has been the most rewarding through his work on the Twilight series and beyond. His bonds with cast and crew from the Twilight films have stayed strong, he assures: his fellow wolves are “like my brothers now,” he says, “and then you have Julia [Jones] and Tinsel [Korey, both costars] who are like my sisters.” It’s like “joining the circus,” he explains. “That’s basically what a film crew is. You join the circus, you all get tight, you’re like a family for a month or two, and then – boom. Maybe you’ll stay in touch, maybe you’ll see them again, maybe you won’t, you know?”

He emphasizes that this is one aspect of filmmaking that continues to draw him in – “Not just working on a character or just being an actor but the stuff behind the scenes.” It’s an affinity for the world behind the camera, bolstered by his recent experience in independent films Winter in the Blood and Desert Cathedral, that has clearly shaped his philosophy on his work and his art. An independent film, he says, is “where the artist comes into work”.

To hear him explain it, it’s answering a call to artistic integrity. He easily ticks off the names of examples and influences, a list that crosses genres and all levels of celebrity. “I grew up watching Johnny Depp,” he recalls, “and like a lot of young actors, I wanted to be Johnny Depp – and we can’t. But he inspires us to stick to artistic credit.” Depp, he notes, had a penchant for turning down big-budget roles in favor of independents, “and he got massive street cred for it.”

“The Twilight movies totally changed my life,” Chaske tells us in this exclusive interview. “I’m working as an actor a lot more and I’ve worked with some amazing directors. The friendships are great, the cast is nice and I’ve been all over the world. The pros outweigh the cons and life is pretty good. I can’t complain.”

What did you do to get in shape for Breaking Dawn?
I gained a lot of muscle mass – I was like 200 pounds of muscle! I worked really hard and in between films, I worked with a trainer at Crunch Gym and we did circuit training, built up different parts of my body, did calisthenics, a lot of running… It’s tough staying in shape [laughs]! You also have to watch what you eat. I’m not 20-something anymore.

Was there a little alpha male competition going on to see who has the best body?
[Laughs] I’m sort of done with that alpha male stuff. When I got Twilight, I was happy to get a job. I wasn’t trying to get into any sort of contest with anybody. We’re all really good friends. It was a wild ride and quite an experience. I really enjoyed it.

What are your co-stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner like?
They’re really nice and they’re really down-to-earth. I didn’t work with Rob that much. I was in a few scenes with him; I worked with Taylor and Kristen a lot more. Taylor’s a sweet kid. Wait, he’s not a kid anymore, he’s a good young man! He’s really rambunctious and he can’t sit still. He’s always doing something, throwing a football, doing flips… I was really impressed with him. Kristen is a sweetheart as well. She’s really professional. Rob’s cool, I just didn’t get to work with him that much.

What do you do when the camera’s not on you?
I pretty much stay low-key. I hang out with the guys and talk. In the beginning, during New Moon, when we weren’t on camera, we’d be working out. We did push ups and sit ups all the time! On Breaking Dawn, we were like, ‘We’re good! No need to work out anymore!’ [Laughs] I would just sit around and talk to the crew.

Chaske Spencer isn’t too sad Twilight is coming to an end. The Breaking Dawn actor talked to OK! about the end of the series and how star Taylor Lautner hasn’t changed … at all.

In Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1, Chaske Spencer plays the leader of the wolf pack, Sam Uley. Off the set, the 36-year-old star takes his role as protector very seriously.

Spencer talked to Parade.com about bonding with his fellow werewolves over those shirtless scenes and saying farewell to the franchise that kick-started his career.

On Sam’s role in Breaking Dawn.
“He has to do a duty to protect the treaty of the tribe, so he goes against Jacob and the wolf pack splits. He has to make some decisions as the alpha male. The stakes are higher in Breaking Dawn. The fans who read the book know what I mean!”


Werewolves vs. vampires.
“I don’t know if werewolves are more interesting. They have their own set of qualities. I like that they’re both supernatural characters. They had no choice becoming a werewolf, so it’s a little different.”

On his favorite film of the franchise.
“Probably New Moon because it was very fresh and I got to know the guys.”

On those shirtless scenes.
“It’s very cold! It definitely was a bonding experience with the guys who play the other werewolves. But it was all in good fun. It’s not a bad day at work when you just have to take your shirt off for a big franchise movie. There are worse jobs out there!”


On the final day of shooting Breaking Dawn, Part 2.
“It was very tough. We shot until we saw the sun come up and we were very tired, so it wasn’t like this magical moment. I just went home and went to bed. I didn’t go out with a bang, I went out with a whimper! I was very tired.”

On the end of Twilight.
“It’s like a party and all parties come to an end. It’s been a fun run. I’ve had a great time and made some really great friendships, but it’s over and I’m looking forward to moving on, but I’ll always be grateful for this franchise.”

On the fame that surrounds Rob, Kristen, and Taylor.
“Everyone handles it in their own different way. No one can give you a blueprint on how to handle stuff like this. You just have to trudge through it. You make some mistakes, but you learn from it.”
