Chaske Spencer plays wolf pack leader Sam Uley in the blockbuster “Twilight” series films. Moviemikes.com recently caught up with Chaske to talk about his role in the films as well as some of the other projects he is involved with.

Adam Lawton: How did your role in the “Twilight” series come about?
Chaske Spencer: I auditioned for it through Rene Haynes who had cast me a bunch of other films. Everything really happened through her. They had the audition for all of the wolf pack members and I read initially for Sam and that was the role I ended up being cast for.

AL: Were you familiar with the story line for “New Moon”?
CS: I knew a little bit but not really that much. I had seen “Twilight” advertised around New York but I didn’t know too much about it other than it was about a vampire. After auditioning and getting the part I realized how big of a deal it was.

AL: “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” will be your third time playing the role of Sam. Do you feel your portrayal of the character has evolved with each film?
CS: In “Breaking Dawn” you’re going to see a lot more of Sam as he is a very pivotal character in the series and he really comes out in “Breaking Dawn”. The previous films were kind of a build up for the Sam character. My favorite book that I went to for ideas about the character was “Eclipse” as it had a lot more of the back story.

AL: Have you been allowed to make the character more your own since “New Moon”?
CS: Not really. I came in after reading the books and doing my research and I had an idea as to how I wanted to portray the character. I just went at it and waited for the director to tell me if I was doing something wrong. According to him I was doing ok because unless they tell me I’m doing it wrong then I just keep going with what I got.

AL: What has been your reaction to the fans of the film and did you think the series was going to be as big as it has become?
CS: I kind of knew it was going to be huge especially after our first experience with the paparazzi. The U.S.A. Today article where they announced who was going to be playing the wolf pack along with me researching the first film I knew it was going to be big. I was expecting the reactions of it and the fans are great as they have pretty much given us a career. If it wasn’t for the fans of the books the studios would have never made them. The fans really give us a job and it’s been a snowballing effect through each movie. “Breaking Dawn” is going to be huge and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It’s a fun wild ride but I am ready to move on.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1, the latest installment of the Twilightseries, had its Hollywood premiere last night, and members of the Wolfpack—shape-shifting Quileute Indians played by Chaske Spencer, Kiowa Gordon, Bronson Pelletier and Alex Meraz—joined co-stars Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner on the black carpet. Native actors Gil Birmingham, Booboo Stewart, and Julia Jones, who also play Quileute tribe members, were also on hand.

“That’s easy. ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind,’ all the way.

“I love the mystery of it. I love the story. I love the pacing. I love the acting. Spielberg is such a genius and that film is such classic Spielberg. I think it has an energy and a life that is unique to his style of directing.

“I remember seeing it for the first time, and how it just hit me like, ‘Bam!’ and there it was, and I couldn’t look away. I couldn’t stop watching. That is the mark of a great movie. I don’t even know how many times I’ve seen it since, but I still get that feeling every time.”

Chaske Spencer will be seen once again as Sam Uley in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1,” hitting theaters Friday.

How did your acting career begin?
Chaske Spencer:
It began when I moved here to New York City and I was cast in a movie called Skins, which was by Chris Eyre and since then it’s just been a steady, slow climb to being a working actor. It’s been definitely a weird journey!

Is it true that you dropped out of your first semester in college and literally went to New York with a hundred dollars in your back pocket?
That’s true, that’s very true, yeah. I just had to figure out what I wanted to do in life and I was very desperate to see where I was going, so I moved here, got a one way ticket and that was it.

How did you land your role in Twilight?
The casting director Rene Haynes, who put me in a lot of films, suggested I audition for this and I did. And it was a tough audition. I didn’t know what part they wanted me for.

How was it to prepare for the role?
It was pretty intense; the workouts were probably the most intense part. It was a tough process, but you know the results are great. I enjoy working out now!

What was it like going from relatively unknown to actor in such a huge blockbuster?
It took some adjusting but I don’t take it too seriously, I think I’ve been able to adjust to it in a healthy way.

Twilight fans are particularly fervent, but have you had any crazy encounters with fans?
Yes, I’ve had some incidents where it’s been a little too overboard, I won’t go into them. Most of the fans are great, in fact 90% of the fans have been wonderful and they’ve been really supportive and they’re just really good people. But there’s that other 10% that I think go a little overboard, I think they should probably try to find a healthy outlook on life because it’s not reality, Twilight is a fantasy world.

How has your character developed since New Moon?
I think you get to look a little more at Sam and his conflict with the outcome of the marriage between Edward and Bella. I think fans are going to be very happy with the results of the film.

We recently got a chance to talk with Chaske Spencer, or as you guys know him Sam from the Wolf Pack. Check out some of the highlights of our interview!

There was a major shift in the on screen relationship between you and Jacob, how did you feel about these scenes?
“I was really excited to film those conflict scenes because it was such a huge part of the story…and working with Taylor, he’s a really focused actor, and I had a good time working with him.”

It is so crazy to see how much Taylor has grown up since the beginning of Twilight. What have you noticed about him growing up?
“He has not changed one bit. He is still the same guy I met before, he’s really nice and really a good young man and I wish him the best! It’s pretty rare to find one of those folks that are just genuinely really nice, and you know all the cast is.”

Chaske also went on to say that he’s been out of town so the excitement over the premiere of Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 hasn’t hit him yet. That’s ok, I think we’re excited enough for him!

“Twilight” star Cheske Spencer knows a thing or two about taking it all off for the role of a lifetime. I caught up with the werewolf hunk to talk about stripping down and the much anticipated sex scene between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.

“He breaks the headboard or something,” Spencer reveals about the racy scene that he tells me was shot on a super closed, private set. “In fact, so few people had access to the filming that everyone in the cast, with the exception of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, saw the scene only when a short clip of it ran in the upcoming movie trailer.”

And while it might seem like fun running around with the pale and beautiful few, Spencer admits that a lot of hard work goes into looking that good.

“As soon as we got the job, we had to take our shirts off. And they were like, ‘Alright, we gotta get trainers for these guys.’ In a matter of three weeks, I put on almost 15 to 20 pounds of muscle,” Cheske tells me on Thursday night’s episode of my talk show, “Naughty But Nice With Rob.” “It was a hard workout. It was circuit training, plus three protein shakes a day, plus eating a strict diet. You maintain that and I’ve been involved almost three years. In the beginning, especially in the makeup trailer, we were all checking us out. It was bad, but we keep each other pretty level-headed.”

Alex and Andrew Smith are two Montana boys who made their debut with the football drama “The Slaughter Rule,” which starred Ryan Gosling, at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. For “Winter in the Blood,” the brothers are again using their home state to illustrate an interior world with an adaptation of the novel by award-winning Native American author James Welch. And the man they’re illustrating is portrayed by Chaske Spencer, best known as one of the werewolves of “Twilight.”

“Winter in the Blood” tells the story of a man, Virgil First Raise who comes home from a bender and realizes his wife has left him. He heads on a journey across the small towns of Montana trying to find her—always just missing her, but his trip leads him to reflect on his own life and his priorities in it.

Virgil is in nearly ever single scene of the film, except for some flashbacks. “Our casting agent Rene Haynes said (of Spencer), ‘This is really the guy,’” said Alex. “He lives in New York, but he’s from Montana and Idaho. He understood this character and he told us he has been waiting for a role like this for a long time.”

Andrew added, “He’s an actor from our first feature and we became friends after that. We have similar backgrounds in certain ways; he grew up in Northern Idaho. He’s become kind of like a brother to us.”

Welch was a friend of the Smith family and his novels were familiar in their home. “Our friend and co-writer Ken White was staying at our mom’s ranch, and while he was hanging out, he took the novel off of the bookshelf and read it in one sitting,” said Alex. “He said, ‘Why aren’t you guys making this movie?’  We were so close to it that we couldn’t see that this was a movie we needed to make.”
