Chaske Spencer: More Than Wolf, & Tinsel Korey: Scarred Beauty

Almost through with their time portraying the couple atop the “Twilight” wolf pack, American Indian actors Chaske Spencer – whose smoothly deep voice could stop one heart while making another flutter – and the lovely, passionate and endlessly multi-talented Tinsel Korey are primed to launch further in to an entertainment world widely devoid of representation for their people. More importantly, the similarly minded two are utilizing much of their franchise-bestowed spotlight to not just better their neglected communities but inspire others to do the same through efforts such as their Be the Shift campaign. Both were happy to shed the censors in favor of honest discussion on the rarely publicized issues of substance abuse and poverty on Native reservations, the state of Natives in Hollywood, working with one another and what’s ahead in next year’s final installment in the epic love saga of fangs and fur.

We speak to Breaking Dawn’s Chaske Spencer

It’s close to midnight but we’re still wide awake. After all, interviewing Chaske Spencer, the 36-year-old hunk who plays Sam Uley in the Twilight movies, is a pretty good reason to stay up, right? We’re definitely not complaining because we know plenty of women who would love to be in our comfortable sneakers right about now.

“The Twilight movies totally changed my life,” Chaske tells us in this exclusive interview. “I’m working as an actor a lot more and I’ve worked with some amazing directors. The friendships are great, the cast is nice and I’ve been all over the world. The pros outweigh the cons and life is pretty good. I can’t complain.”

What did you do to get in shape for Breaking Dawn?
I gained a lot of muscle mass – I was like 200 pounds of muscle! I worked really hard and in between films, I worked with a trainer at Crunch Gym and we did circuit training, built up different parts of my body, did calisthenics, a lot of running… It’s tough staying in shape [laughs]! You also have to watch what you eat. I’m not 20-something anymore.

Was there a little alpha male competition going on to see who has the best body?
[Laughs] I’m sort of done with that alpha male stuff. When I got Twilight, I was happy to get a job. I wasn’t trying to get into any sort of contest with anybody. We’re all really good friends. It was a wild ride and quite an experience. I really enjoyed it.

What are your co-stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner like?
They’re really nice and they’re really down-to-earth. I didn’t work with Rob that much. I was in a few scenes with him; I worked with Taylor and Kristen a lot more. Taylor’s a sweet kid. Wait, he’s not a kid anymore, he’s a good young man! He’s really rambunctious and he can’t sit still. He’s always doing something, throwing a football, doing flips… I was really impressed with him. Kristen is a sweetheart as well. She’s really professional. Rob’s cool, I just didn’t get to work with him that much.

What do you do when the camera’s not on you?
I pretty much stay low-key. I hang out with the guys and talk. In the beginning, during New Moon, when we weren’t on camera, we’d be working out. We did push ups and sit ups all the time! On Breaking Dawn, we were like, ‘We’re good! No need to work out anymore!’ [Laughs] I would just sit around and talk to the crew.

Chaske Spencer on Taylor Lautner: He Hasn’t Changed

Chaske Spencer isn’t too sad Twilight is coming to an end. The Breaking Dawn actor talked to OK! about the end of the series and how star Taylor Lautner hasn’t changed … at all.

“I think everyone knew it was just the end,” he said. “There was a feeling on set that it was over. It wasn’t a sad feeling, at least that’s what my personal feelings were. It was just we had a run and I felt that, speaking for myself, I had a great time working on the films. It’s over now, I made some good friends. I had some good times. It’s done.”

Was it bittersweet at all?

“Not really. It wasn’t really bittersweet for me. I had a good time. It was pretty much when you go to a party and when you’re ready to go, you’re ready to go.”

Has Taylor changed at all since becoming a megastar? Nope!

“No no changes whatsoever,” Chaske revealed to OK! “He’s stayed the same. Still a nice guy, no one’s really changed at all.”

“He’s the same guy as when I met him.”

Chaske also had some kind words for director Bill Condon.

“He’s a wonderful man, just a wonderful man. It was a pleasure to work with him. He’s just a great guy. I’ve been really lucky to work with some great directors on this franchise. He did bring his own style to it and he’s a good guy.”

Chaske Spencer on the End of Twilight: ‘I Went Out With a Wimper’

In Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1, Chaske Spencer plays the leader of the wolf pack, Sam Uley. Off the set, the 36-year-old star takes his role as protector very seriously.

Spencer talked to Parade.com about bonding with his fellow werewolves over those shirtless scenes and saying farewell to the franchise that kick-started his career.

On Sam’s role in Breaking Dawn.
“He has to do a duty to protect the treaty of the tribe, so he goes against Jacob and the wolf pack splits. He has to make some decisions as the alpha male. The stakes are higher in Breaking Dawn. The fans who read the book know what I mean!”

Werewolves vs. vampires.
“I don’t know if werewolves are more interesting. They have their own set of qualities. I like that they’re both supernatural characters. They had no choice becoming a werewolf, so it’s a little different.”

On his favorite film of the franchise.
“Probably New Moon because it was very fresh and I got to know the guys.”

On those shirtless scenes.
“It’s very cold! It definitely was a bonding experience with the guys who play the other werewolves. But it was all in good fun. It’s not a bad day at work when you just have to take your shirt off for a big franchise movie. There are worse jobs out there!”

On the final day of shooting Breaking Dawn, Part 2.
“It was very tough. We shot until we saw the sun come up and we were very tired, so it wasn’t like this magical moment. I just went home and went to bed. I didn’t go out with a bang, I went out with a whimper! I was very tired.”

On the end of Twilight.
“It’s like a party and all parties come to an end. It’s been a fun run. I’ve had a great time and made some really great friendships, but it’s over and I’m looking forward to moving on, but I’ll always be grateful for this franchise.”

On the fame that surrounds Rob, Kristen, and Taylor.
“Everyone handles it in their own different way. No one can give you a blueprint on how to handle stuff like this. You just have to trudge through it. You make some mistakes, but you learn from it.”

Media Mikes Interview with Chaske Spencer

Chaske Spencer plays wolf pack leader Sam Uley in the blockbuster “Twilight” series films. Moviemikes.com recently caught up with Chaske to talk about his role in the films as well as some of the other projects he is involved with.

Adam Lawton: How did your role in the “Twilight” series come about?
Chaske Spencer: I auditioned for it through Rene Haynes who had cast me a bunch of other films. Everything really happened through her. They had the audition for all of the wolf pack members and I read initially for Sam and that was the role I ended up being cast for.

AL: Were you familiar with the story line for “New Moon”?
CS: I knew a little bit but not really that much. I had seen “Twilight” advertised around New York but I didn’t know too much about it other than it was about a vampire. After auditioning and getting the part I realized how big of a deal it was.

AL: “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” will be your third time playing the role of Sam. Do you feel your portrayal of the character has evolved with each film?
CS: In “Breaking Dawn” you’re going to see a lot more of Sam as he is a very pivotal character in the series and he really comes out in “Breaking Dawn”. The previous films were kind of a build up for the Sam character. My favorite book that I went to for ideas about the character was “Eclipse” as it had a lot more of the back story.

AL: Have you been allowed to make the character more your own since “New Moon”?
CS: Not really. I came in after reading the books and doing my research and I had an idea as to how I wanted to portray the character. I just went at it and waited for the director to tell me if I was doing something wrong. According to him I was doing ok because unless they tell me I’m doing it wrong then I just keep going with what I got.

AL: What has been your reaction to the fans of the film and did you think the series was going to be as big as it has become?
CS: I kind of knew it was going to be huge especially after our first experience with the paparazzi. The U.S.A. Today article where they announced who was going to be playing the wolf pack along with me researching the first film I knew it was going to be big. I was expecting the reactions of it and the fans are great as they have pretty much given us a career. If it wasn’t for the fans of the books the studios would have never made them. The fans really give us a job and it’s been a snowballing effect through each movie. “Breaking Dawn” is going to be huge and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It’s a fun wild ride but I am ready to move on.
